Based on Dr. Ralph Reitan’s method of compiling multiple cases with the same neurological diagnosis (into notebooks for heuristic purposes – hence “the Black Book”), this seminar will intensively explore clinical cases with traumatic brain injury. The goal of the seminar is to improve attendees’ ability to identify and understand brain-behavior relationships associated with TBIs.

This advanced seminar will emphasize the comprehensive clinical interpretation of adult cases using the Halstead-Reitan Neuropsychological Test Battery. There will be an emphasis on the correlation of neuropsychological test results with behavioral/clinical symptoms, presenting complaints, history, and neurological pathology.

Each case will be explored systematically through a process of test interpretation, integration of clinical history and neurological findings, differential diagnosis, determination of treatment or rehabilitation needs, and impact on daily and independent function.

All attendees must have previously completed a workshop from The Neuropsychology Center or Reitan Neuropsychology Labs and be knowledgeable about data plotting (as taught in the Administration/Interpretation seminar). By limiting enrollment to participants with this level of experience, we expect to be able to offer intensive, advanced training. There is opportunity for direct interaction between the instructors and participants. Participants will be able to test out their diagnostic skills by formulating the cases provided.

ACTIVE participation is expected of all attendees!

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Participants in this seminar can expect to improve their ability to recognize important patterns in neuropsychological test results associated with traumatic brain injury, to integrate presenting complaints and history with neuropsychological test results, and to understand implications of various test patterns for patients' daily and occupational functioning. They can expect to improve their understanding of the process of integrated neuropsychological interpretation using the HRB. In particular, attendees will learn HRB neuropsychological patterns of performance from individuals with traumatic brain injury. Further, they will gain skills in regard to differential diagnosis and the clinical impact of this disorder on a patient’s daily function.
